When I think of summer, I think of endless days at the beach, al-fresco dinners with family and friends, and some of the best vacations I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy. The arrival of warmer weather gives us even more excuses to get outdoors, travel and take some much-needed time to relax. But beyond the unmistakable feeling a little bit of sun, sand and surf can bring, there are also legitimate health-boosting reasons to love the season even more. Here are just few of mine:
It’s no secret that I love to travel. And summer tops the list for the time of year when most people plan a break. In our constantly plugged-in world, vacations aren’t an indulgence, they’re a necessity! Getaways lower stress, improve our mood and allow us to gain some perspective in order to get back to our day-to-day with a refreshed state of mind. The only question is where to travel next?
Breaking a Sweat
I love exercising outside during the summer, not only because I’m a nature girl at heart but because the heat makes every workout that little bit more challenging. And when your workouts are more intense, you work up a sweat, which helps us get rid of toxins and encourages us to rehydrate. Breaking a sweat has a ton of benefits including clearer skin and boosted circulation.
Some of my favorite fruits are local and in-season during the summer, including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and cherries. Great for smoothies, fruit salads (and the odd cocktail). Sure, they’re delicious but they’re also packed with vitamins, antioxidants, fiber and lots of water to keep you hydrated. I never take a trip to the beach or pack a picnic for the boys without bringing a fair share of fruit.
A (Healthy) Dose of Sunshine
Is there anything better than feeling the sun and a summer breeze on your skin? Luckily, it’s good for you too, in moderation of course. Our bodies naturally produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and the health benefits are major! Vitamin D fights disease, improves mood and even boosts weight loss. Remember, it’s super important to wear SPF whenever you’re in the sun, so that you can get all the benefits without the burn.
The Beauty of Nature
Summer makes us all want to get outside more to experience flowers in full bloom and the feeling of sand or grass under your feet. Being in the fresh air surrounded by plants, trees and animals brings us a sense of harmony and wellbeing, and ignites our sense of adventure, which all contribute to an optimistic outlook.
So, get out there and make the most of my favorite season! Your body and mind will thank you.
