Last fall, I found out from my physician that I was a high risk candidate for breast cancer – a scary and overwhelming diagnosis. Instead of letting the news shut me down, I took the time to think and consult with my physicians to determine what my options were. As a wife, mother of four, and a career woman, I decided to be proactive and get a double mastectomy to minimize the risk of breast cancer.
The procedure was a success and I feel very blessed. Throughout this journey, I decided to try and do good for myself and others – to create my own goals. Leading a healthy lifestyle by eating healthfully and regularly exercising has always been important to me, and I am now more committed than ever to that. Another goal was to run a half-marathon in New York, and to raise money for breast cancer research. On March 15, I ran the NYC half marathon and raised thousands of dollars for this important cause.
My children and husband were at the finish line, and this was so rewarding for me. Our boys learned about setting goals and following through, about being passionate in helping others, staying fit and making dreams happen!
