The Ultimate Running Kit: Tips on How to Stay on Track

by

Running is a form of exercise that many people use to keep fit, to relax and reduce stress, to increase energy, to get the creative juices flowing, to compete, to be proud of an accomplishment and to just have plain fun! However, there is a lot more to running that goes beyond putting one foot in front of the other at a consistent pace. Check out our running tips to keep you on track:

At the very minimum, you should have the following to keep yourself comfortable during your run:

  • Water to prevent dehydration
  • Dry-wick clothing (anything that pulls sweat away from the body and dries quickly to prevent chaffing) – shirt, shorts/tights/pants, socks
  • Running shoes to prevent injury
  • Sunscreen to protect your skin
  • Hat and sunglasses if it’s hot and/or sunny outside to also protect yourself
  • Protective wear for your head and hands if it’s very cold outside to prevent heat loss (gloves, running beanie/headband that covers the ears)
  • A positive mindset so you have a wonderful running experience

If going on a longer run, you will want to have the following items to maintain your energy, hydration and comfort so you can endure the distance:

  • Gait analysis at your local running store to make sure you have the right running shoes for your body
  • Proper nutrition before, during and after the run to maintain energy levels and for proper recovery
  • Hydration belt/water bottle while running to prevent dehydration
  • Electrolyte pills/drink to replace lost electrolytes and to prevent dehydration

Additional running essentials for those that would like to keep track of their progress include:

  • Running watch
  • Running app on your phone
  • Activity tracker

Lastly, please make sure that you always do a proper warm-up and cool-down with every run to prevent injury.  Happy running!
