Jazzing Up January: 5 Activities to Enhance Your Month


November and December come with joy, frenzy, and plenty of excitement.  There’s Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas.  Lots of great food, gifts, and parties. Then comes January. It starts off with a bang–welcome 2016– then fizzles out.  But there’s more to January then ice storms, diets, and New Year’s resolutions.  So here’s to pumping yourself up and jazzing up January, which can be one of the most fun-filled months of the year.

  • Plan A Winter Picnic

It’s a crisp, clear January day, which can only mean one thing–It’s time to grab a friend and head out for a winter picnic!  Pack up your blanket, a board game or favorite book.  Fill up a thermos with hot chocolate, mulled apple cider or soup.  Don’t forget the sandwiches.  Then head to your nearest park or wooded area.  Have fun!

  • Take A Line Dancing Class

You may still be partied out from your New Year’s Eve festivities, but line dancing is a way to get you moving again–and you don’t even have to go to the gym!  What is line dancing?  A dance where everyone is arranged in rows, performing the same steps at once.  No partners necessary. There’s an instructor present to help teach the choreography.  It’s so simple and fun, you’ll often walk away knowing the steps and able to practice on your own. Here’s a bonus: the next time you’re at a wedding, family reunion, or the local event and the Cha-Cha Slide or Cupid Shuffle are played, you’ll be right up there kicking it with everyone else.  Maybe even teaching a few steps.

  • Crew Night In: Slumber Party

You’re never too old to host a sleepover for your crew.  One fun idea is to have everyone print out their favorite photos from 2015, bring a scrapbook album and other supplies and reminisce about the fun times had last year.  You can even watch oldie-but-newly-released-to-Netflix movies (Meet the Parents coming this month!) if you’re really into taking things back.  End the night with a mini spa session.  Try applying a tablespoon of Manuka Honey to your face for 15-20 minutes, wash, and go to sleep feeling rejuvenated.

  • The NFL Playoffs Are Here

When every game and every play matters, it can only mean one thing– it’s January– time for the playoffs.  The holidays are over and work and school are back.  However, you still have a reason to celebrate every weekend until February!  Get in to the spirit by donning your favorite team’s jersey or t-shirt (even if they’re not playing-no judging here). Playoffs start with the Wild-Card round on January 9th, 2016.

  • New Year. New You

Ever wonder how you would look with a new hairdo?  Well, here’s a chance to be bold.  Try playing with non-traditional color combinations.  Mix lavender and pink and blend blue, purple, and green to give your hair a cool rainbow look.  If you’re more traditional, try ombre.  Light brown to caramel or blonde to brown is always in.

Now that you have the new hair, here’s a beauty tip to take with you into the New Year. Try steaming your face twice a week to help open up pores and remove dirt and blackheads.  Then, wash your face with cleaner.  With these four steps, your face will be thanking you.

  1. Boil a pot of water.
  2. Pour the water into a bowl. Add essential oils if you like.
  3. Drape a towel over your head. Lean over the bowl for 7-10 minutes.
  4. Now you’re finished. Rinse with cold water and moisturize.

Remember if you have any major skin concerns, consult a specialist before you steam.

The month isn’t over yet, so here’s one last tip.  Explore new career opportunities. Re-work your resume and update your LinkedIn and other relevant social media pages.  Talk to friends and network, network, network.  The job you’ve always wanted may be just on the horizon and your dream company is probably hiring.  After all, January is one of the best months for finding and securing a new job.  So get to work!
