For many, the New Year is a time of intention setting, when we vow to shed bad habits and go after our goals. I know it is for me. I used to always tell people my New Year Resolutions were a secret and that it would be bad luck if I told them. But then I realized I was just rationalizing not telling anyone so only I would know the results. We can set resolutions and stick to them, but sometimes we just need a plan. Not to worry, Fabletics has your 2016 guide to making sure you meet your fitness goals all while looking great doing it! Here are a few ways to help manifest your intentions and goals into reality.
Keep a log
Whether you opt for a handwritten notebook or an online journal, tracking your progress helps you stay honest. And the more that you monitor your performance, the better you’ll do at sticking to your goals. There are numerous online apps and tools specifically for setting and recording goals, too!
Start with a pretty attainable goal. Accomplishing it will get you excited, keep you focused, and motivate you to go after your other resolutions, increasing the chances you’ll succeed.
Set a routine
They say it takes 2 weeks to make something into a routine. Once we get used to logging/tracking daily, at a specific set time, it will soon become part of our routine and a habit, like brushing our teeth. And, setting reminders (ie: a notification alarm on your phone) will help remind you of your routine.
Know it’s a process
Perfection is unrealistic. There are bound to be minor hiccups along the way and that is completely normal. We all have ups and downs, so don’t give up. Resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track – you want your goals to be a source of pride, not punishment.
Celebrate each success
Regardless of how big or small, celebrate each accomplishment. Keep a little money saved and get yourself a tiny treat with each success; however you enjoy celebrating, reward yourself as incentive. It doesn’t have to big or fancy, but make sure to pat yourself on the back and look forward to your next success and celebration.
Keep the following tips in mind now so you have a foolproof plan to accomplish your fitness goals and stay motivated all year long.
Invest in a pedometer, heart rate monitor, or calorie tracking tool.
Hire a pro
Personal trainers are here to help. Just one personal training session per week can help if you’re in a workout rut.
Make it fun
Sign up for classes or find a running route that you love. Check out new parts of your town that you haven’t explored yet and go for a walk.
Bring a Friend
Not only will most gyms give you a referral fee, but you’ll also have someone to workout with. Multiple studies have shown that people who work out with a partner (or trainer) have better consistency and better results than those who don’t. And, guess what? The gym is full of like-minded people that could use some support. Make a gym buddy and don’t bail!
Plan your mistakes
Hate working out in the am? Make a plan to work around setbacks. Keep spare shoes in your car or office so you’re ready for anything, anytime.
Make a vision board
Set aside some photos of what you’re trying to achieve and put them on something you see daily like your computer or phone background, or even your fridge. When we can see our achievements visually, we start to perceive them mentally and it’s much easier to put in the hard work when you see the light at the end of the tunnel. For example- when I was training for my 2nd Half Ironman, I had a goal of beating my previous time by an hour. I would write “6:57” on my hand every time I went out for a hard run. I ended up completing it in 6:37 and came in fourth.
