After an epic performance in Rio, FL2 influencer and Triple Jump champion, Will Claye, writes about the day he will never forget.
I woke up on August 16th knowing it would be the best day of my life. I was not disappointed.
1. I won a silver medal.
Not everyone gets to say they’ve won a medal, and now I have three. Last week, I took home a silver and my teammate, Christian Taylor, walked away with gold. We’ve had a friendly rivalry since college and we constantly push each other to do better. I love him like a brother- but he knows I’m coming for him next time.
2. I jumped a personal best.
When you jump farther than you’ve ever jumped in your life, the limits to what you can achieve get raised and your personal goals become higher. I jumped 17.76m. The world record is 18.29m. For those of you that have never watched Triple Jump, think the length of a bowling alley. That’s where I need to be.
3. I got engaged to the love of my life.
Immediately after, I proposed to my girlfriend in the stands. Queen was there supporting me despite missing the opportunity to join the Olympic team in Hurdles by just .02 seconds. Her selflessness and strength are why I am where I am today.
I’m not going to lie. I want that gold. Everyone who knows me knows that. It’s been the chip on my shoulder ever since I started jumping. My path is clear: Go to Tokyo in 2020, jump a new personal best, and take home the gold. And that might be the second best day of my life.
