Struggling to get Back into a Post-Summer Routine?


The start of fall means the end of vacation-mode and getting the kids back to school, diving back into work and amping up my workout routine. Even if you’ve only enjoyed a short break, It’s easy to see why people often feel overwhelmed going into the new season. With that in mind, here are a few tips and tricks I use to make sure I get back on track as painlessly as possible!


Schedule, Schedule, Schedule!

I always have a ton going on, so making sure everything is scheduled on my calendar is a must! It might seem boring but trust me, you’ll save yourself a ton of time (and stress) in the long run. One thing that helps me get back into a routine (or start a new one) is to tie activities into existing behaviors. For example, if you got into the habit of grabbing an iced coffee every morning over the summer, take a longer route and jog to the coffee shop. That way, you’re getting additional exercise without overhauling your whole routine.


Small Changes, Big Results

There’s nothing that can derail a routine faster than setting crazy expectations that you can’t possibly live up to. If you already know that you can’t sustain waking up at 5am every day to work out before getting the kids ready for school, don’t do it! But do make sure you set realistic goals, enough time to accomplish them and stick to it (that means no constant rescheduling)! If you’re feeling intimidated, set yourself up for success by making smaller changes that you can continually build on. Who said you have to go from 0 to 100 overnight?


Be Flexible

Along with being realistic, it’s so important to be flexible and let your routine evolve over time. If you find that something isn’t working for you, fix it! Don’t feel like you have to stick to something that isn’t effective or enjoyable. This is YOUR routine. Make it work for you. Personally, I find that my work routine varies dramatically from day-to-day—one day I’m at the office, another at a photo shoot in the middle of the desert—so super rigid schedules don’t make sense. However, I always protect my workout time because it’s a big priority for me. It’s all about finding your balance.


Be Forgiving

This one is so important! Whether we’re talking about work or workouts, you’re going to make mistakes, even with all the best intentions in the world! No matter how organized and dedicated you are, things have a way derailing our willpower. If that happens, accept that a mistake was made and move on. Focusing on the negative just lets you spiral… instead, just learn from what went wrong and try to avoid it in the future.


Find Time for Fun

No matter how busy you are, you have to find time to enjoy yourself. For me, that means making family time a priority every single day by making sure we all sit down to dinner together with no phones, no TV and no distractions! Also, I work my butt off and eat well during my normal schedule so I can truly take a break and relax when I’m on vacation. (Seriously, who works out on vacation?) Life is here to be enjoyed, so make sure you’re not letting it pass you by. 🙂
