Get Centered, Get Happy: Tips From The Happiness Planner

When we think of self-care, most of us imagine taking a long bath, getting a mani/pedi or getting a massage. But those are just some of the things you can do to make you feel better on the surface. Self-care actually goes much deeper than that. It starts from understanding who we truly are and doing things in alignment with our true selves. When we achieve our goals and our dreams come true, we feel truly fulfilled and content.

You may have grown up believing you must sacrifice yourself for those around you. That you must work tons of hours each week to become successful. But what does all the success mean to you if you aren’t happy, you don’t have anyone to share it with, your relationships with your family and friends are weak and you’re feeling the effects of burnout?

So here are some tips to help you prioritize self-care; take care of your mental, physical and emotional well-being at a deeper level; and make sure that success will never come at the price of your happiness.

  1. Do things that align with who you truly are.

Grab a notebook and spend the next five minutes thinking about YOU. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are you passionate about? What makes you happy? Set goals that align with your core values. Engage in activities and work where you get to utilize your strengths, personality traits and natural talents. When you do this more often, you’ll find yourself feeling aligned with who you truly are. Practice it. Repeat anytime you feel you’re feeling out of flow. You’ll become aware of what needs to change in your routine.

  1. Schedule happiness in your daily life.

Make a list of the things that make you happy and why. Then make a conscious choice to do them more often! Schedule them into your calendar and integrate them into your daily life. Once you do this on a regular basis, you’ll experience a shift in how positive you feel and how much you want to wake up every day just to do something that makes you happy.

  1. Pay attention to how you feel every day.

Watch out for signs of burnout. If you feel tired, learn how to recharge. Sometimes we get so caught up in our goals and aspirations that we forget to pay attention to the only moment that you can control—the present. If you’re a planner, you might find it very hard to enjoy the moment. But you can practice by learning to take everything one day at a time. Focus on making each day great—and you’ll realize that now you’ve had a great week, a great month and a great year!

  1. Surround yourself with happy, positive people.

Energy is contagious—whether it’s good or bad. Surrounding yourself with negative people means you can’t help but feel affected by their negative energy and self doubt. The key to happiness and embracing self-care is to start surrounding yourself with people who feel the same way you do—positive, happy people who prioritize self-care.
